In any company, employee development must be part of the administration's goals. It is not healthy for a company to invest in employees who are not displaying signs of improvement. It is also not healthy for employees to stop learning new skills. These points put together conclude that a good employee development program should benefit both the employee and employer. Employee development must also be continuous, not a one-off thing.
Employee development must be implemented because it improves the productivity of the company's workers. Company owners will save a lot of money if they retain loyal, productive employees. The employees in turn will feel the importance of their place in the company. An employee development program also aims to assess the strengths and the weaknesses of each employee. Each employee has unique points that have to be addressed. The administration must respond to the results of these assessments by designing future employee development programs. These programs must address both generic and specific points of improvement.
Employee development creates a healthier relationship between the employee and employer. The employer discovers the strong and weak points of his or her employees. He or she will then find out what tools to equip the employees with; these tools will later build a better foundation for the company by creating better-skilled employees. Employee development, of course, benefits the individuals it aims to improve. Employees learn more effective ways of performing their jobs. Actually, they will start to view their jobs not as things they ought to do but things they want to do. This is because through employee development, every day becomes an exciting learning experience, which is made fulfilling by having employers who truly care about them.
For employee development to work, employers must contribute money, time and genuine interest to invest in the improvement of employees. Employers must realise the true importance of employee development and must continue providing venues for improvement. They must not be content with just one training session. Remember that the word "development" suggests progressive growth.
Employee development will not work if employees do not exert their own efforts. Employees must contribute time and effort to the training programs offered to them. What good is employee development if employees themselves do not have the desire to improve?
